How it’s worked out

The back-bar charge comes off service sales first: $7,000 less 5% is $6,650. The stylist’s 45% split of that is $2,992.50. Retail is paid separately — 10% of $900 is $90 — for $3,082.50 in total.

If senior stylists should earn a higher split as their book fills, use tiers instead of one rate: the tiered commission calculator shows both ways tiers can be paid.

Common questions

What is a typical hair stylist commission?

Service splits of 40% to 50% are common, often rising with tiers for senior stylists, with retail paid separately at around 10%. Product charges, where used, come off before the split.

Is the back-bar charge legal?

Many salons use one, but rules on deductions from pay vary by state. Keep it to the real cost of product, apply it the same way to everyone, and show it as its own line on the pay statement.

Are tips part of commission?

No. Tips belong to the stylist and aren’t included in the sales the split is applied to.
