Commission

$500.00

$5,000.00 × 10% = $500.00

The formula

Commission = sales × commission rate.

  • Commission: $5,000 × 10% = $500
  • Rate: $500 ÷ $5,000 = 10%
  • Sales needed: $500 ÷ 10% = $5,000

Before you use it, settle what counts as a sale — most plans pay on what the customer actually paid, after discounts and returns, and leave out tax and tips. The how to calculate commission guide covers that, plus tiers and draws.

Common questions

How do you calculate commission?

Multiply the sales by the commission rate. $5,000 of sales at 10% is $5,000 × 0.10 = $500.

How do I work out a commission rate?

Divide the commission by the sales. $500 paid on $5,000 of sales is $500 ÷ $5,000 = 0.10, or 10%.

How much do I need to sell to earn a set commission?

Divide the commission you want by the rate. To earn $500 at 10%, you need $500 ÷ 0.10 = $5,000 of sales.

What if my plan has tiers, a goal or a minimum?

Then a single rate doesn’t tell the whole story. Use the tiered commission calculator for rates that rise with sales, or the salon commission calculator for a minimum to earn and a rate that climbs toward goal.
