Commission statement template
A commission statement should let someone check their own pay without asking you. If they need to ask how a number was reached, the statement is missing a line.
Updated September 28, 2026
What to include
- The period — the exact dates the statement covers.
- Sales, split by type — service and product separately, after discounts and returns.
- The goal — and how it was set, if it isn't a fixed number.
- Progress — sales as a share of the goal.
- The rate applied — and why that rate.
- Each bonus on its own line — product bonus, membership pool share, one-off bonuses.
- Adjustments — returns, clawbacks or corrections, each with a reason.
- The total — and when it will be paid.
Example
| Line | Amount | How it was worked out |
|---|---|---|
| Period | Sep 1 – Sep 30 | |
| Service sales | $1,440.00 | After discounts |
| Product sales | $420.00 | 22.6% of total sales |
| Total sales | $1,860.00 | |
| Personal goal | $2,938.78 | Team goal × your share of clients (120 of 490) |
| Progress | 63.3% | Sales ÷ goal |
| Commission rate | 2.53% | 2% at 50% of goal, rising to 4% at goal |
| Sales commission | $47.09 | Total sales × rate |
| Product bonus | $0.00 | Needs more than 25% product; you were at 22.6% |
| Membership pool | $60.00 | 2nd place: 30% of the $5,000 pool × 4% |
| Adjustments | $0.00 | |
| Total earned | $107.09 | Paid with the Oct 5 payroll |
The "how it was worked out" column is what prevents most questions. The product bonus line in particular is worth showing even at $0 — it tells the person exactly how close they came and what to do next month.
Common mistakes
- One lump sum. A single "commission: $107.09" line invites a dispute every month.
- Silent adjustments. A clawback netted out of the sales figure looks like an error.
- Arriving weeks later. By then nobody remembers the sales it describes.
Better still: during the month
A statement explains last month. The same breakdown shown during the month — rate, progress, how close the next bonus is — can still change what happens. CommissionBoard shows each person this breakdown on their phone as it builds, and exports a PDF payroll report with every one of these lines at month end — no statements to build by hand.
CommissionBoard turns a POS export into a live commission leaderboard your staff can see on their phones. Get started for $20/month, try the commission calculator or read the other guides.
