How a commission split is worked out

  1. Take the product charge off service sales, if you use one. $6,000 less 5% is $5,700.
  2. Apply the split. 60% of $5,700 is $3,420 to the stylist.
  3. Add retail commission at its own rate. 10% of $800 is $80.
  4. Total pay is $3,500. The salon keeps the other $3,300 of the $6,800 sold, before its own costs.

A flat split is easy to explain, but it pays a stylist with a full book the same rate as someone still building one. If that’s the problem, a tiered split raises the rate as sales grow.

Common questions

What does a 60/40 commission split mean in a salon?

The stylist keeps 60% of the service sales they perform and the salon keeps 40%. The split is usually applied after any product (back-bar) charge, and retail is paid separately at its own rate.

What is a typical salon commission split?

Service splits of 40/60 to 60/40 are common, with newer stylists toward the lower end and senior stylists with full books toward the higher end. Many salons move to tiers so the split rises with monthly sales.

Is the product charge taken before or after the split?

Usually before: the product charge comes off service sales, and the split applies to what remains. Whichever you use, show it as its own line on the pay statement so it doesn’t look like an error.

Are tips included in the split?

No. Tips belong to the stylist and are not normally part of commissionable sales.
